There are other cases where GM crops are beneficial. Biodiversity is when there are multiple types of plants in an area. In Qaim’s book it provided an example with GM Papaya’s. “A ringspot virus is a serious disease that can devastate papaya plantations and entire industries” (pg. 78 Qaim). This virus had an outbreak on Oahu Island (pg. 78). The author explains the importance of biodiversity through the event at Oahu Island. This virus ruined and made papayas unable to be grown anywhere on Oahu Island. This stresses the importance of biodiversity and how it is vital to have a large pool of different varieties. But, due to the cooperation of Cornell university and University of Hawaii. They were able to create a virus that was resistant to papaya (pg79). Due to genetic engineering, humans are given the chance or power to create biodiversity to allow plants to grow and thrive in different areas in the world.
